Redrim is a roleplay in which you, the player, are a mysterious cryptid-like monster of your own design. You lurk about in the Redrim forest/mountains near the most likely american town of Red Pines. Your goal is to survive and keep out of sight from humans. Here is a crude mapThere are four types of monsters, which are as follows: Naturals: {bigfoot, mokele mbembe} Creatures that were born naturally, awoken from a hibernation due to some mysterious force. Players of this type start out alone in a location of their choosing in the Forest part of the map. Created: {frankenstein's monster, etc} Creatures artificially created by the mad scientist Dr. Heinz in the 40s. Players of this type start in the same room, breaking out of glass tanks in a laboratory in the basement of the abandoned asylum. Aliens: {Xenomorphs, The Thing, just no advanced technology or above-human intelligence} Creatures from space. How they got to earth is unknown until it is eventually uncovered during the course of the thread. Players of this type start out together emerging from stasis pods hidden away in the mountains part of the map. Otherworlders: {the things from the Mist, Creatures from the Half-Life series} Beings from other dimensions with vastly different rules, drawn to the world and trapped here. Players of this type start in the deadlands, Emerging from a rift near the Monolith. I will edit this post and add information as it is needed. Here is a character sheet: Name: What would you like your monstar to be called/what do the townsfolk call it? Type: Natural, Created, Alien, or Otherworlder? Diet: what can your creature eat? Appearance: what does your mysterious monster look like? Abilities: What can they do? Other: any other info you'd like to add? You may want to add if they are hostile or not. Here's a filled out sheet as an example: Name: Mandog Type: Natural Diet: Omnivorous, favors meat. Appearance: Humanoid and ape-like, covered in shaggy fur. Has floppy ears and a dog-like tail. Makes dog-like noises. Roughly six feet tall. Abilities: very fast and agile, howl scares off normal animals. large baboon-like jaws with strong bite pressure. Rudimentary understanding of tools and simple weapons and has opposable thumbs. Other: Afraid of artificial light. Hostile to humans and other monsters. Dogs fear it and run away from it upon sensing it. Cannot swim. Climbs trees to hunt or hide. This is not an AU, so please feel free to create a cryptid that isn't just your usual character, but in monster form. As a matter of fact, go nuts! as long as I don't deem it too powerful, feel free to make your creature as strange as possible. This thread is for working out the basics and refining ideas.

Name: Belph E. Gore.
Type: Natural.
Diet: Omnivorous. Has developed a taste for human children in particular.
Appearance: A giant dark blue sloth. It has a bedsore covering its entire back going all the way to the spine. It's claws are very long and crooked. It's fur is also very bushy and long. Eyes full of sleep.
Abilities: Hibernates for years at a time. Upon waking, it usually won't get up until it's about to starve. Can sleep for upwards of 10 days straight. It is very strong, even considering how big it is. Its claws are venomous, and if they break the skin, the victim will suddenly feel a great loss of energy.
Other: Will violently react if forcibly disturbed from its sleep. It usually starts out sleeping while hanging from a branch, but it has often dropped to the ground by the time it wakes up. Is one of several reasons for the children at Camp Redrim mysteriously vanishing.

Name: Hartworm
Type: Otherworlder
Diet: The deer is omnivorous, eating flesh and fruit indiscriminately. It can't quite seem to digest most leaves, though.
Appearance: The monster inhabits a large, moose-sized golden deer. However, this deer is slightly off - something's not right about its mouth, or its tail, or its knees. Or anything about it. Nested inside the deer is a worm, some kind of slippery thing with a drilling snout. The silent thing waits in coils, puppeting the deer from inside.
Abilities: The deer is far more agile and strong than any other deer, even accounting for its large size. Infested humans will gradually turn into deer over the course of a few days. They are unaffected the first day, but will grow antlers during the night. The worm always keeps a saw near its host in order to remove them. The next night, the host will acquire leg hooves and a hunch, and throughout the course of the day, the hunch will become more and more pronounced and the hands more like hooves. At the end of the day, a naked deer hybrid will be forced to flee into a wooded area. The transformation is "complete" at this point, but it is not over. In the morning, a new deer will emerge, with fur of the same color as the lost person's hair. They will be completely silent. It is usually at this point that the worm seeks a new host, by luring them up to touch the deer. The worm can puppet more than the deer, capable of infesting and puppeting any human within striking distance.
Other: An abandoned deer is capable of producing near-human vocalizations, but they seem to be entirely gibberish. These abandoned deer display some signs of intelligence and work together, but it is uncertain if the people who used to own the bodies are still in control. If the worm is forced to abandon a partially transformed host, it can slither through underbrush. It will usually try to re-inhabit one of the abandoned deer. The partially transformed host, once abandoned, will have no control over any part of its body below the neck. They can speak, see, and move their eyes. They die shortly afterwards of catastrophic organ damage and internal bleeding. They are entirely conscious during the whole process of transformation, although they can feel no pain in body parts below the neck.

Name: Warin
Type: Alien
Diet: While still small, the Warin eats by burrowing into people and animals, and it targets vital organs in this stage. Once the Warin gets too big to burrow, it will kill it's target and attempt to eat the corpse whole.
Appearance: It starts as a red three centimeter long featureless maggot.
Abilities: It gains traits from anything that it eats and has remarkably durable skin.
Other: It trusts anything that feeds it, but will try and eat anything it meets until tamed.

Name: Davar
Type: Natural
Diet: Omnivorous, but only resorts to plant life in times of starvation.
Appearance: Davar, in the most basic sense, looks like a wolf on steroids. Davar has grey fur, and as previously mentioned, looks sort of like a werewolf. He cannot stand on two legs for long, but can balance to reach things high up. He has much larger muscles that a "normal" wolf, and is quite larger, almost the size of a bear. He has large claws, which sometimes glow golden.
Abilities: Davar has the ability to subtly invade someone's mind. Once inside, he will generally try to change emotions, to either make an ally, or to trick them into getting close enough to kill them. While using this ability, his claws on his two front paws glow golden.
Other: Davar usually tends to kill things he encounters, but if he feels they may be useful, or could harm him in a fight, he will try to make them an ally. Davar may try and kill a human if they see him, or if he goes too long without a meal. Davar is capable of speech, and it sounds like batman's voice, but raspy and strained.

Name: Snakeman (Not very fancy, I know, but reasoning this is what humans will call him, as he does not care for names, it is the most likely.)
Type: Natural
Diet: Entirely carnivorous. His biology makes it so that the more challenging a hunt feels, the more delicious the prey is. If there's no challenge, it tastes awful, and he will have stomach cramps for a while.
Appearance: Appears a massive Cobra-like creature, with a sort of torso area similar to an especially naturally muscular human male's, without nipples, of course. He has two strong arms, ending in three-fingered claws, two fingers of about a foot's length, and one six inch long thumb, on both hands. Additionally, his cobra hood does not actually mix with his neck, leaving space for a necklace or something similar. His face is like a cobra's, though more "scrunched in" backwards, and with additional teeth, instead of just the fangs. He also has four eyes, two crimson in color, and two amber in color. His scales are the color and texture of grass and leaves on his back side, and the color and texture of treebark on his front side. His face's scales are purple and chartreuse, mixed in spiral patterns. He has pierced his flaps with Aztec Gold.
Abilities: They are extremely fast and agile, and due to their body, they have no trouble climbing terrain, due to both having sharp claws and a slithering body. They are not hindered in any kind of environment, though are naturally better in Forests, due to both their camo and the trees acting as perfect ambush points. Despite this, over the years he has trained himself to manage in every environment except urban. He originally even had to train to master the Forest, having started out in a Rainforest. They can change their camo, but it takes about 30 minutes to complete, and as such, is not very useful in combat. he can additionally change his color (But not texture) for a short burst, usually to signify a threat display. This is because his body's DNA is very easy to change and reconstruct, though not to metamorphosis levels. Because of this, he can also regenerate lost limbs in about an hour or so, and cannot bleed out unless his heart is destroyed and he cannot repair it. Even if his heart is destroyed, he does not die, at least not instantly. The only way to take him down in a singular attack is to destroy his brain. His body creates a venom he can transfer both through his fangs, and through his blood. He uses this blood to coat his tools with poison, when he needs them. He is as strong as the average bodybuilder. He also naturally has the ability to unhinge his jaw and swallow things whole, but he only uses this to dispose of human bodies, after looting them, of course.
He has tribal human intelligence, he can make traps, tools, and basic lairs, but cannot operate complex machinery, at not without being taught how to, and cannot really forge, instead sharpening stones or using the occasional looted knife. Throughout his years wandering forest to forest, he has discovered how to make various traps and tools.
Other: Will not kill Children, Elderly, the Mentally Ill, or Tinfoil hat-type people, unless he has killed another human near them. The reason for this is that anything they say will most likely be considered nonsense or a lie. Migrated over several years from Mexico, in a deep underground city full of snake people like him, to here, out of a desire to hunt, and regular needs to migrate due to investigations. When not hunting or trapping, spends his time making objects out of the skin and bones of his fallen victims, making sure none of it goes to waste. He will loot any dead humans he finds, or has the displeasure of killing. He will always bury dead children instead of swallowing them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name: The Beakman/The Plague Doctor/Abokist
Type: Alien
Diet: Feeds off a fluid that humans have not yet discovered, located in the brainstem. Will also eat human food casually upon modifying himself to to have a sense of taste.
Appearance: Looks like a Plague doctor, though wrapped in some sort of alien material that is resistant to bullets. His suit is made of a black, rubbery texture, marked with small hexgrids and long, red lines. In the center of the chestpiece is a sort of container, activated on the Plagye Doctor's whim, inside being an array of alien medical tools, as well as some sort engineering. What looks like a beaked mask is actually rubbery skin, with two hollow eyesockets that end in glowing red circles. The "hat" is actually just more of its long head, though capped, the brim being a strange weapon that can change shape, usually into a dagger or knife, though it is also often thrown. It is razor-sharp. Underneath the "longcoat" is coated in a sticky substance whips drips onto the floor. It seemingly has no consistent bone structure, and can bend in any way. The "beak" can retract, fading from existence, revealing a a jagged maw, with a long tongue within. This tongue does not experience taste. When its mouth is exposed, it cannot smell, as its nostrils are on its beak.
Abokist's anatomy is unlike most earth creatures. He lacks any bones, but can temporarily solidify the goo inside his body to form bonelike structure, easily breaking and reforming, which gives him his fluid movements. His body is almost entirely made of the slime his undercoat drips, and it produces more from a Core that moves freely through Abokist's body. The core is made of the same material as his "brim", and is very difficult to break, it contains both Abokist's consciousness as well as the organ that allows him to digest Brains and the juices within. It is mostly connected to the mouth, to feed, but will detach and move throughout the body in risky combat. It can shape bits of the goo into human organs, such as a stomach. There is no circulatory system to speak of.
Abilities: Aside from being quick to learn the (mad) sciences, the Plague Doctor makes literally no sound when moving, though its weapon creates loud buzzing noises when moving. If it locks eyes with a weak-willed human, it can take control of its mind, using it to steal any supplies they might have, or let them use their room as a new laboratory. People of strong will are immune to this, and most people can resist, even if it's only for a few seconds. The goo is secretes eliminates micro-organisms around it, though this effect can be turned off when the Doctor needs to for an experiment. He is naturally immune to all earthly toxins.
Other: Massively curious, and seeks to set up shop. Doesn't want to kill ANY cryptid, instead seeing them as potential research candidates. Will start by playing serial killer and killing humans and animals to get feels of their anatomy, and will then move on to more ambitious goals.

Name: Litany [Old Name, from its "first birthing"], Candlelight [More serious townsfolk name], Big Flamin' Piece of Shit [Common Townsfolk Name], Lord of Moths [Cultist Name, if one forms]
Type: Otherworlder
Diet: Litany feeds only on the dying sanity and individuality of those that gaze its scriptures, be it animal or man. The more knowledgeable or strong-willed a person is, however, the more its existince is compounded.
Appearance: Litany appears as a vaguely humanoid mass of crimson wax, dripping and hardening at the same time. Multiple scrolls and scriptures cover the sides of its body, bound with letter seals of various alien symbols. These scriptures stomp around the legs and lower torso. From its back and head emerge several candles, each ending in blue flames, which merge into one giant flame around the center of the back. In the flame an alien world can be seen, barren and desolate, full of cracked, bony spires. Black Ziggurats are built by slaves in droves, and nine suns hang in the sky, scorching the earth. Hordes of moths constantly follow the figure, like a shroud. At the end of its "arm" limbs are long, hooked chains, which are normally retracted.Where a "face" would be is an open book, which shows some sort of starmap.
Abilities: Litany's main ability is to drive beings mad by looking at it, or even being in its presence for long. Its scriptures pierce their mind and engrave themselves in their memory, and eventually, the madness will catch up to them, and they will try and recreate whatever images of Litany's world are engraved into their head. This could be creating alien technology for an engineer, spreading baleful teachings for a priest, creating art of this world for an artist, or writing down their visions for a writer. A biologist might even try to recreate beings from this world. Those driven insane will slowly take on rat-like characteristics. Wounds caused by its hooks fester quickly and viciously, though never enough to kill something outright, instead relying on the enemy making fatal mistakes due to its infection... Or from the Rats and Insects. Litany can control creatures designated as "vermin", including most ticks and fleas, rats, arthropods (especially centipedes, flies, mosquitoes and spiders), and the occasional raccoon.
Other: Appeared once before on this world, during the Black Plague, and very nearly opened a gate into its world. The remains of this gate are now known as the Paris Catacombs. Is uninterested in other Cryptids and will only fight if it needs to. Is more focused on gathering vermin and spreading its madness. Really spooky.

Name: sphere lizard/ "living limb farm"/ "Thistle lizard" Type: Natural Diet: Carnivorous preferring bugs and smaller lizards Appearance: A large lizard around twice the size of a Komodo dragon with a large growth on its back spherical in shape which is not entirely viable normally, its skin is an earthy brown with dark red spots and the sphere on its back is covered in tentacles that when dormant look like bright red hairs. its legs have a striking resemblance to human arms and are very good at scaling trees and walls and cliffs.
Abilities: is able to use automatism to shed every limb of its "body" until all that is left is the sphere on its back which actually contains its brain and heart which are encased in a thick layer of bone, the hair like tendrils allow the sphere to roll and hang on to branches and burrow while it waits for its pseudo-body to reform the process of which is slow and while his process occurs it will be mostly blind but has a form of sight relying on vibrations. all of its lost body-parts grow smaller spheres on them but the energy reserves in the limbs is usually too weak to regenerate on thier own but if a head is lost and is near a source of food it can grow into a full clone of the original lizard allowing for asexual reproduction.
Other:very territorial but will warm up quickly to those that respect its space, its good at remembering faces and has a mental capacity just slightly above that of a corvid. it will often give a tail or an arm to people it likes as gifts but will only give its head to a mate to adorn their nest to scare off predators.

Name: The Grabber (People can be very unimaginative. I mean, c'mon, 'Bigfoot'?)
Type: Natural.
Diet: Carnivorous, unless adapted otherwise, somehow.
Appearance: Primary Larval Stage: A large, very long (About 20 feet long) many legged wormlike creature, halfway between a bobbit worm and a millipede. They're covered in a tough, black cuticle - but the underside is brightly coloured in striking red and yellow patterns. The head is strongly armoured with chitinous plates, and a pair of incredibly hard pincers, usually hidden, can extend out from the sides of their head. The front of the head has many bundles of fibrous antennae, that can extend. Chrysalis Stage: A large, slime covered object - the shape of a regular butterfly chrysalis. It is patterned with vibrant red and yellow, and looks rather crystalline, though closer inspection would reveal a softer, more gelatinous consistency. Not that inspection of any kind would usually be possible - the chrysalis ideally spends its entire cycle buried deep underground, with the only indicator of its presence being the network of what appear to be vibrant yellow and red flowers, spread out through a large area around the chrysalis. These flowers are actually fleshy sensory organs, designed to monitor environments and organisms that live and wander into the Grabber's territory. There is a large primary flower, directly above the Chrysalis, and tens of smaller secondary flowers. The Grabber stays in the Chrysalis stage for about 24 hours, before emerging, with whatever changes that may have occured... Post Chrysalis Stages: Variable appearance, depending on the stimuli encountered during Chrysalis stage.
Abilities: Primary Larval Form: The larval form is an ambush predator, mainly - it will bury itself underground, and spread out its antennae into the ground surrounding it, sensing vibrations. If anything moves into the area covered by the antennae, the Grabber can leap out from their hiding place at incredible speed, extending their sharp pincers in the same movement, and grabbing whatever unfortunate creature may have been caught, the sharp appendages cutting into them. The Grabber can distinguish between living and non living creatures through an unknown means, and displays possibly intelligence in how it kills - aiming for weak areas like the base of the neck, and spine, appearing to account for prey that it does not usually encounter. It does relocate, usually by burrowing underground, using a quick drying, slimy substance that it excretes from its surface to prevent cave-ins. However, it can and does move above ground often, seemingly scouting out the area, and examining unfamiliar structures and features. If discovered on the surface, its immense speed and slicing power of its pincers are still useful, even without the element of surprise. Additionally, the slime that it produces is strongly acidic, causing a burning sensation for those who make contact with it, though not causing any major damage. Chrysalis Stage: The fleshy flower-like sensory organs will monitor their environment, and the animals that they encounter. All of the flowers emit pheromones that entice animals to come close to them, but if they are in danger of being eaten, they fold up and emit a repulsive scent, until the animal backs off. The main flower is the exception to this behaviour - if an animal comes close enough, a barbed tentacle lashes out, and floods them with a potent neurotoxin, whilst the other tentacles drag the prey into the flower, for digestion. The energy gained from these kills is important to the growth of the Grabber, and aspects of the captured creature can be incorporated into the Grabber's metamorphosis, should anything be deemed 'useful'. It is unknown how the Grabber actually makes these decisions, or indeed, if it is a merely instinctual process.
Other: Almost every aspect of the Grabber is variable, but some things remain consistent - namely, its intelligence, which can be difficult to assess. The Grabber can show reason, planning, excellent capacity for learning, and even what appears to be emotion - just not as humans would know it. The alien nature of the Grabbers mind aside, there is clearly something more than the instinctual thoughts of a base animal at work here, and its actions sometimes hint at a frighteningly human intelligence, but different somehow...and with a mysterious sense of purpose...

Name: The Flesh Trunk
Type: Otherworlder
Diet: Meat and resources
Appearance: The flesh trunk has two appearances, the seed and the tree
The seed is a chitinous object about the size of a fist, it has two wing like objects, similar to that of a Samara seed, that somehow allow it flight. It looks for a corpse or a large thing of inert bio material, that is when the second stage starts.
Th tree grows up from the corpse, appearing as an oak, but might become a truly titanic tree. It will be able to replicate various characteristics of the corpse it seeded in. Though it will try and replicate the bark of other trees if they are in the area.
Abilities: The tree once finishing it's metamorphis, which takes a few days, it will be able to rebirth the corpse as it was when it died. Which will create the first Tree child. It can also absorb other corpses and rebirth them, or rebirth living creatures. It is able to replicate various attributes of things absorbed, eventually possibly even artificial things. It cannot move but can stretch out it's fleshy roots to seek objects out
Tree child- they retain everything from the moment they died. At first they will run in fear of the tree, but eventually their secondary traits will set in. All tree born have an unconscious desire to protect and serve the tree, as well as never fighting other tree born. If the tree is in dire danger they will rage and attack the danger.
Other: The tree has slightly below human intellect, but displays it oddly. It sends out general thoughts feelings and images to the target, sometimes gaining random knowledge from the rebirthed. It is curious
